Weather Alert: Heat Your Dog

Summer Heat Affects Your Dog

You may enjoy the summer heat at the beach or taking a walk outside, but it could be hurting your family pet.  You may not realize it, but your pets feet hurt when they walk on hot concrete.

We have had many 100 degree days and we have a lot more to come.  With the pavement being heated every day and not having a chance to cool off you may be hurting your dog or cat and not even know it, just by walking them.

You may want to consider putting socks on your pet or walking them in a park where they can go through grass and not stay on hot pavement or concrete.

NOTE: Make sure you alert your dog walker about this serious issue.

Keep your pets cool

Some things you can do to keep your pet cool during the summer:

  • Walk pets early in the morning before the pavement or concrete gets too hot.
  • Have your pets wear pet socks or booties to protect their feet.
  • Make sure they have access to water ALL day.
  • Add some ice cubes to their water dish.
  • Make sure they have plenty of shade when they are outside.
  • Keep your pets groomed properly for winter.

Signs of Heat Stroke in Your Dog

One last warning, make sure you recognize the symptoms of overheating:

heatstroke is a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment by your veterinarian. Symptoms are exaggerated panting, rapid heartbeat, high fever, vomiting, staring, anxious expression and warm, dry skin. (source)
